| What is the Ramsar Convention? |
CONVENTION ON WETLANDS
The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and
revitalization of wetlands, with an interest toward future generations
of these habitats. The treaty promotes the fundamental ecological functions
of wetlands and their value regarding the economic, cultural, scientific,
and recreational. The official title of the treaty is "The Convention
on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat"
and was developed and adopted by participating nations in Ramsar, Iran,
on February 2. 1971. The Ramsar Convention advocates the preservation and
revival of various types of habitats-not only of Waterfowl, but also of
coral reef or subsurface water systems. |
